The island of Fuerteventura is an absolute treasure, brimming with protected areas and natural landscapes, and with hundreds of beaches and places of interest scattered across it. But it is also a large, elongated island, the second largest of the Canary archipelago covering 1,660 km2, and measuring more than 100 kilometers from one end to the other.

So, if you want to tour the island and discover its wonders, you should choose your place to stay wisely. Due to its strategical location in the middle of the island, only 7 kilometers from the airport and its wide range of accommodation and services, Caleta de Fuste is the ideal place to stay on your island adventure of Fuerteventura.

We suggest a two-day tour around Fuerteventura, starting from Caleta de Fuste, to discover the main attractions, if not all, that Fuerteventura has to offer.

DAY 1: North Tour

• Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park

From Caleta de Fuste if we head north along the coast road we will arrive at the Dunes of Corralejo Natural Park, a natural park of sand worthy of the desert, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean on its east side along 3 kilometers of coastline, creating paradisiacal beaches of white sand and turquoise waters, a must-see.

• El Cotillo

A little over 20 kilometers from the beaches of Corralejo, on the west coast, awaits the charming fishing village of El Cotillo and its unique beaches, on one side, small pools and lagoons with calm and transparent waters and, on the other, large and wild beaches.

 

• La Oliva

On the way inland make a stop at the village of La Oliva, one of the oldest on the island and home to the largest number of buildings and historical constructions, such as the Church, the Casa de Los Coroneles, and La Cilla Museum.

• Tindaya

Following the inland route heading south, we shall pass by the village of Tindaya and the magical mountain of the same name, one of the main archaeological sites of the natives of Fuerteventura with its hundreds of engravings on the summit.

• Antigua

Passing through the village of Tefía, with its mountainours landscape and traditional houses, and the Eco-Museum La Algociga, which is also worth a visit, we arrive at Antigua, which is the capital of the municipality of Caleta de Fuste. Don’t forget to visit the Majorero Cheese Museum in Antigua, the culinary treasure of Fuerteventura, and take a nice walk through the Church Square.

From Antigua, we head towards the coast to Caleta de Fuste, 18 kilometers away, where it is time to get our strength back  after an intense and magnificent day of hiking. Head to one of its many restaurants with culinary offerings of all kinds.

DAY 2: South Tour

• Las Salinas

We start the day with a visit that is just 4 kilometers south of Caleta de Fuste, one of the most charming places in Fuerteventura, The Museum of Las Salinas del Carmen, from which comes a highly prized salt foam in the culinary sector extracted using traditional methods and a must visit for its special beauty.

• Pozo Negro

The next stop, 15 minutes by car following the road heading south,is Pozo Negro, where it is worth visiting the village of La Atalayita, an archaeological site of great value, and enjoying a swim at its lovely black sand beach.

• Jandía Beaches

At about 40 km, after leaving behind the coastal villages of Tarajalejo and La Lajita, we reach the beginning of the Great Beaches of Jandía, an extension of coastline formed by 26 kilometers of beautiful beaches of fine white sand and an immense crystalline turquoise sea. Sotavento, notable for the huge lagoon which appears at high tide, Butihondo, Playa Esmeralda, Morro Jable, and Cota Calma.are just some of the names given to the beaches that make up this spectacular group.

• Cofete

From Morro Jable, leaving behind the asphalt and civilization, we head to the virgin nature of the Natural Park of Jandía, which is home a natural jewel, the Cofete beac. This immense, spectacular, and wild stretch of coastline is admired by everybody who visits it.

• Ajuy

We head back to the north, this time by the west road, to make a stop 80 kilometers past Cofete at Ajuy, a fishing village with a beautiful black sand beach, which is also home to one of the most outstanding geological and scenic sites of Fuerteventura, The Ajuy Caves.

• Betancuria

And from Ajuy, 25 kilometers down the road surrounded by a very unique landscape, we arrive at Betancuria, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and the first capital of the Canary Islands after the conquest. Take a stroll through its narrow streets and pay a visit  to the church, the roofless convent of San Buenaventura. It’s a magical experience.

Once in Betancuria we’re close to home, just 10 kilometers from Antigua, and on the way, we can stop to enjoy the views over the mountains of Betancuria Rural Park, a protected natural area of great value and beauty, and to see the giant sculptures of Guise and Ayoze, erected in honor of the native kings who reigned in Fuerteventura when the conquerors arrived.

From Antigua, we only have to take the road that takes you back to the coast to Caleta de Fuste, our temporary home, where we will arrive tired but happy, with a backpack full of experiences that will last forever in our memories.
