Last October 13th, the V Gathering of Kayak Fishing in Fuerteventura was held, organised by Club Deportivo Fuertekayak.

Having 80 participants in the water, this event has been, for some years, the most important in The Canary Islands. Several athletes from different clubs in the islands and the peninsula (Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, Málaga and Marbella) arrived in Puerto Lajas. Nobody wants to miss the great appointment with a worldwide booming sport, Fuerteventura being an unbeatable stage for its practice.
«It all started 6 years ago, an idea from a group of friends who were crazy for fishing and nature», the president of the club Julio César Almeida tells us.
Keeping to the fishing regulations and out of respect for our sea, in the basis of their meetings there is the modality of return sport fishing. The prize for the club is the practice of this sport and the coexistence among amateurs from other places around their kayaks in the wonderful beach of Puerto Lajas.
After this fishing event, which could be celebrated in good conditions of the sea in spite of the threats by Lesley Huracan arriving in our coasts, an amusing celebration took place between participants and their relatives, where food wasn’t scarce. After this, the club took advantage to award its annual prizes to the career path of some athletes during the season, some of them very interesting, thanks to the collaboration of wonderful sponsors.
This meeting is possible thanks to the support by the Ministry of Sports in Cabildo de Fuerteventura, The Townhall of Puerto del Rosario and the AAVV in Puerto de Lajas. It also has an exceptional security device run by ships of Club Deportivo Fuerte acuatic Team.
Since its creation, Club Deportivo Fuertekayak has taken part in official competitions all over Europe; among their achievements we find the Team first position in the II championship Branzino the Challenge, this year celebrated in Italy and three titles of runner ups of the Canary Islands..
On the other hand, Fuertekayak is also supporting several sea competitions, swimming crossings, in Kayak or events like The Ironman in Lanzarote.
Moreover, they foster the respect for the sea and environment in general, thus promoting return sport fishing, the respect for little fish and carrying out several beach clean ups during each season.
