Corralejo Dunes Natural Park

In the municipality of La Oliva, in the north-east of Fuerteventura, you’ll find the Natural Park of the Dunes of Corralejo. The greatest terrain of dunes of the Canary Islands. One of the most important attractions of Fuerteventura, a landscape of spectacular beauty.

The Natural Park of the Dunes of Corralejo includes almost 8 km of coast and more than 2600 hectares. It stretches for approximately 3 km, where you can wander while enjoying the special flora and fauna of the area.

To the north, the dunes border the city of Corralejo, located 5 km away from them. To the south, they border the “malpaís” (a desert extension covered by volcanic rocks and remains of ancient lava flows) of Montaña Roja.

These stunning dunes of fine golden sand are of organic origin, since they are made from the pulverization and disgregation of various marine species, such as shells and molluscs. Moreover, they are dunes in motion for the effect of the wind that slowly displaces them, creating dunes of different shapes.

The Corralejo Dunes Natural Park is a desert landscape full of contrasts, as to the east it borders the amazing blue ocean with its crystalline waters, so typical of this area of the island. From the sand dunes you can enjoy spectacular views to Lobos Island and Lanzarote.

The road FV-1 passes through the dunes on their east part, allowing you to reach all the beaches along the 8 km-long coast. Beaches of extraordinary beauty for any taste. Some of these beaches are ideal for the practice of sports such as surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. You will also find some more solitary beaches, where you can take an amazing swim or a walk…

Every year, these sand dunes are the place where various important events happen, for example a half marathon (Medio Maratón Internacional Dunas de Fuerteventura) and a Kite Festival (Festival Internacional de Cometas, in November on Playa del Burro), just to mention a few.

By the Law on Natural Areas of the Canary Islands, the Dunes of Corralejo were declared a Natural Park in 1994 together with the Natural Park of Lobos Island. Moreover, the Dunes are an area of special protection of birds (ZEPA, zona de especial protección de aves) since they are – as for Lobos Island as well – home to many protected and endangered endemic species. The Dunes of Corralejo are also an ecologically sensitive area.

You cannot leave Fuerteventura without visiting and admiring the Dunes of Corralejo, a real natural wonder.
