Walking through history

An imposing fortified tower dominates the coastline in Caleta de Fuste. It is the Castle of San Buenaventura, built in 18th century to defend the island against pirate attacks and that now stands out as a proof of the island past.

Other examples of Fuerteventura’s culture and traditional architecture can be seen in Caleta de Fuste. In fact, here you’ll find some limekilns that in the past were used in one of the island commercial activities – the treatment and exportation of lime.

Moving south from Caleta de Fuste, you’ll find another trace of the historical culture of the island that persists to this day: Las Salinas del Carmen, an absolute must-visit for its peculiar charm. In this small village, you can learn how to get the perfect sal de espuma, a special kind of sea salt – obtained through an ancient, artisanal process –, that is much appreciated in cooking.
